Women & Media – Are we being abused

I just found a video today that I’m glad was made even though I found it highly disturbing called Women and the Media. You really need to prepare yourself to watch this video because it really depicts how society on a whole views women today.  That doesn’t mean every single person applauds this vision however these ads are getting made, people are seeing them, and they are socially accepted in our society by the masses.  After all, if there wasn’t a demand for this type of advertising it wouldn’t exist in so many of the well known magazines and brands.

Please watch this video with open eyes.  Open eyes to the world of what you can choose or not choose to partake in.  If you are in the media, this is what you or your cohorts are creating.  It’s really sad that beauty of women is being shown via domination, submission, abuse, rape, skeletal figures, bruises, beatings, and so on.. Of course women look at all this and hate their bodies.  They feel abused emotionally… and they should.  This is abuse for all women.

Photoshop is the other huge issue in Advertising and Media about the beauty of women and how they are being portrayed.  Half the body is erased, skin so smooth that there are no pores, wrinkles gone, and it’s impossible to even get close to the perfection depicted.  It’s NOT REAL.  We need to STOP trying to be like something that isn’t even real.  It’s really time.  Stop subscribing to the media’s version of fat, beauty, perfection, and all the rest.  It’s surreal and you can’t compete.

It’s time for this to stop and for us to wakeup to what’s really going on.  After all, if we don’t open our eyes and our mouths, nothing will change.

I work with people who have body image issues and I have a campaign running called Bath Talks where women are getting naked in the bath and talking about how they feel about themselves and their bodies.  They are not showing private body parts – just being open to their vulnerability.  After all, it really does all come out in the bathtub and our self deprecation is “an inside job”.

And now for the video I was talking about earlier…
